Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Also: GEO · generative engine optimization · AI search optimization

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a business more likely to be named and cited in the answers produced by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews.

Why it matters in senior living

Classic SEO earns a position on a results page. GEO earns a mention inside a generated answer, which is a different game: the engine retrieves a handful of pages it trusts for the question, reads them, and composes a reply. You get named when those pages describe you clearly and consistently; you get skipped when the only pages that mention you are thin directory listings.

In senior living the sources that matter are the Google Business Profile, review sites, local directories, local news, and the community's own website, with a different mix per engine. GEO work is mostly about getting the facts families ask about (care types, pricing approach, availability, who it is a fit for) onto the pages each engine reads, in a form the engine can quote.

GEO is measurable. Because the output is a rate across many runs, you can measure visibility before a change, make the change, and measure again.

How Nuovee treats it

Nuovee's “Fix it” layer is GEO: it lists which sources each engine cited in your market, generates citable assets (page copy, FAQ, JSON-LD, an llms.txt), and re-measures on the next scan so you can see whether the change moved the rate.
